Children are our priority - providing critical care for the young and vulnerable.
Our leading Children's Hospital cares for 40,000 patients a year and has the busiest paediatric accident and emergency department in the UK.
The Children's Hospital at The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel serves one of the most diverse and deprived communities in the UK.
When the hospital was founded in 1867 40% of local children did not survive beyond their 10th birthday.
The Children's Hospital has pioneered many advances in medical care such as:
- Installing the country's first X-ray machine for children
- Housing one of the country's largest neonatal intensive care and paediatric critical care units, which receives referrals from all over the UK
- Being one of the few children's hospitals to treat eye cancer
- Identifying the gene responsible for harlequin ichthyosis, a chronic skin condition in which 50% of affected babies do not survive.
The Children's Hospital and staff take pride in furthering the impressive quality of its services.
Since the Children's Hospital opened, charitable donations from patients, families, friends and City organisations have played an invaluable role, enabling the Hospital to offer the very best services to its patients.
Support will help improve methods of diagnosis and treatment enabling The Children's Hospital to purchase new equipment or carry out more innovative research.
About the Children's Hospital:
- 4,260 babies delivered in 2007/8
- 40,000 patients treated every year
